Dealer trade

A transaction where one dealership sends a vehicle to another, usually to fill a specific customer order, which often requires transport between lots.

Also called: Dealer swap, Inventory trade

A dealer trade is when two dealerships exchange vehicles, or one sells a unit to another, so a store can deliver the exact trim, color or configuration a customer wants. Franchise dealers use trades to pull inventory from other stores of the same brand, and dealer groups move units between rooftops to balance stock.

Trades create transport needs on short notice. If the other store is close, a staff member may simply drive the car over, which is a form of driveaway. For longer distances a carrier is the usual choice, and timing matters because a customer is waiting. That is where the pickup window and expected transit time become part of the sales conversation.

A few habits keep trades clean. Confirm the VIN on both ends, record mileage and condition at pickup and delivery, and agree in advance which store pays for transport. Because the vehicle often goes straight to a sold customer, a damage note made at delivery is far easier to resolve than one found days later.

When a manager needs a transport number to put on the deal, an instant quote with both ZIP codes and the VIN gives one in seconds, without waiting on a callback.
