Transit time

How long a vehicle is on the truck from pickup to delivery, which is separate from the time it takes to schedule a carrier.

Also called: Delivery time, Time in transit

Transit time is the number of days between pickup and delivery. It depends mainly on distance, but the route, the number of other stops on the truck, weather, traffic, road construction and federal limits on how many hours a driver can work all play a part.

It helps to separate transit time from the wait before pickup. A shipment's total timeline is the time to dispatch a carrier, then the pickup window, then the transit itself. Buyers often expect the total to match the drive time on a map, but a carrier hauling several cars makes pickups and drop-offs along the way, and drivers must stop for required rest.

For dealers and marketplaces, setting expectations early prevents frustrated customers. Give a range rather than a date, and explain that cross-country moves take longer than regional ones and that seasonal peaks can stretch timelines. If a delivery deadline is firm, expedited service improves the odds but does not guarantee arrival on a given day.

Transit times are estimates, not commitments, and AutoTransportVehicle.com does not guarantee them. Our car shipping transit times guide explains what drives timing on different routes.
